PRIDE AND PREJUDICE
It is the most famous of Jane Austen's novels and one of the first "romantic
comedies" in the history of the novel. It was first published on January 28,
1813.
Since then there has been adaptations for both stage and screen making the work
of Jane Austen a true classic. And now Wilsons very own ACT! for Youth has the
honor of bringing this classic tale to the Boykin stage.
Join us as Mrs. Bennet, the mother of five is set out marry off all five of her
daughters!
Mr. Bennet, a man of culture and taste, who sense of humor has helped carry him
through 25 years of marriage. His manners vary from dry humor to elaborate
sarcasm, yet he is devoted to the real interests of his family.
The family servant, Mr. Hill, is quiet, unobtrusive and efficient. Which would
be expected to be in the service of the Bennet family.
We meet Jane, the oldest, who believes people are better than they are.
Elizabeth, a modern girl for the 1800s, who happens to have beauty and brains
along with a quick temper and proud spirit. Mary, somewhat plain but very
likeable, who often finds herself quoting from something she read in hopes to
enlighten anyone who will listen. Catherine, rather delicate in appearance, has
an engaging giggle when along side her younger sister Lydia when there is fun in
the project. Lydia, the youngest, utterly frivolous and irresponsible, thinks of
nothing but parties, officers and clothes.
Then there is Mrs. Bennets rival in match making, Lady Lucas, who also has a
daughter Charlotte.
Mr. Bingley is the catch of the county handsome, moderately rich to go with
his charming manners. He has eyes for Jane from the moment he sees her. We also
meet his sister, good manners, proud and somewhat conceited. Her chief concern
is finding a suitable match for her brother.
Enter Mr. Darcy tall, handsome, rich, but also comes across as cold and stiff.
Attracted to Elizabeth even though the feeling is not mutual (at first). Then
there is Mr. Collins a tall, heavy set young clergyman who charms Elizabeth
even though the feeling is not mutual.
Mr. Wickham, the handsome young officer, dashing with undeniable charm but is
also untrustworthy and insincere.
And finally, Lady Catherine, who sweeps the room as she walks with superior
flair and mannerisms. Quite obviously she expects everyone to scurry along when
in her presence.
Tammie and David Knoll have the privilege to direct this story of twists and
turns along with a great team of actors and crew. We look forward to keeping the
tradition of excellence alive which has established ACT! for Youth as a great
theatre experience for everyone involved!
