Wilson Arts and Greenfield Fine Arts invite audiences on an unforgettable journey this summer with Anastasia: The Musical, the latest production in Wilson’s long-standing Summer Community Musical tradition.

Inspired by the beloved Twentieth Century Fox motion pictures and featuring a book by Tony Award winner Terrence McNally with music and lyrics by Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens, Anastasia transports audiences from the final days of the Russian Empire to the excitement of Paris in the 1920s. At the heart of the story is Anya, a courageous young woman determined to uncover the truth about her past. Along the way, she encounters colorful characters, unexpected friendships, and the possibility of finding home, love, and family.

Since 2011, the Summer Community Musical has brought together performers of all ages and experience levels, showcasing the incredible talent found throughout our community. This year’s production continues that tradition.

Performances will take place July 24 and 25 at 7:00 p.m. and July 26 at 3:00 p.m. at the Edna Boykin Cultural Center in downtown Wilson.

Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for seniors and students, plus tax, and may be purchased by visiting https://wilsonartsnc.square.site/show-tickets, by phone at 252-291-4329, or in person at the Wilson Arts Center. Tickets will also be available at the Boykin Center an hour before performances.

Sweeney Todd has become a bloody, worldwide success since being awarded eight Tony’s, (including Best Musical), for its Broadway premiere. Stephen Sondheim’s and Hugh Wheeler’s (A Little Night Music, Pacific Overtures) tasty, thrilling, theatrical treat has simultaneously shocked, awed and delighted audiences across the world.

An infamous tale, Sweeney Todd, an unjustly exiled barber, returns to nineteenth century London, seeking vengeance against the lecherous judge who framed him and ravaged his young wife. The road to revenge leads Todd to Mrs. Lovett, a resourceful proprietress of a failing pie shop, above which, he opens a new barber practice. Mrs. Lovett’s luck sharply shifts when Todd’s thirst for blood inspires the integration of an ingredient into her meat pies that has the people of London lining up… and the carnage has only just begun!

A kind and eccentric millionairess wills her entire estate to Duchess, her high-society cat, and her three little kittens. Laughs and adventure ensue as the greedy, bumbling butler pulls off the ultimate catnap caper. Now it’s up to the rough-and-tumble alley cat, Thomas O’Malley, and his band of swingin’ jazz cats to save the day
